St. Gerard Catholic School
February 12, 2014
Enrollment/Registration for 2014-15 Current family registration began the beginning of February with new family registration to start the end of Feb. If you haven’t returned your registration packet for next year, please make every effort to return it as soon as possible. We have the wonderful problem of having some grades that are full and want to provide new families the opportunity of communicating their placement for the fall in a timely manner. Word of mouth continues to be our best form of advertising. If you know of someone looking for a preschool, kindergarten or simply a Catholic school program, please don’t hesitate to send him or her our way. We would be happy to share everything that St. Gerard School has to offer.
MNSAA Accreditation This past week, St. Gerard School welcomed twelve members of the MNSAA accreditation team. After having submitted our self study report to the Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Lansing, the faculty and staff prepared to have a site team come and take an even closer look at the school. It is basically the team’s job to substantiate what was documented in the self-study. Team members make observations and suggestions for the future. We will receive our site visit report from the team in approximately 3-4 weeks. It is from this document that we will work from for the next five years. Mr. Sean Costello, our Associate Superintendent, addressed the faculty and staff before leaving by confirming, “that St. Gerard School truly is a school of distinction.” St. Gerard School also has a five-year strategic development plan through the parish.
Middle School Youth Rally Attention parents of 6th, 7th and 8th graders! The Diocesan Middle School Rally is quickly approaching on Saturday, March 8th. The Rally will take place at Lumen Christi Catholic High School in Jackson. We will car pool to get there. This is a great opportunity to strengthen the faith of your child. They will be among 500 other students of their own age with the goal of building community. If your child is unsure, perhaps they could bring a friend, even if they aren’t Catholic. If you have any questions please call the parish office and ask for Jeff or email him at firstname.lastname@example.org .
Feeling Good Mileage Club Spring is just around the corner. (we hope!) St. Gerard is once again working with Sparrow to offer the Feeling Good Mileage Club. This is a free, seven week program starting in April that runs during recess until the end of the school year. Registration continues this year to be done by the parents, either online at sparrowmilesclub.com or by sending in the postage paid postcard sent home last week in Thursday envelopes or available in the office. Once you register, you will receive progress reports and other information through Sparrow. Registration opened February 1st and runs until March 7th. The program begins on April 10th. You child may not participate unless they are signed up. Parent volunteers are encouraged and necessary to provide this program. If you are interested in assisting with this program or have any questions, please email Stephanie Kramer at email@example.com .

Catholic Schools Week While Catholic Schools Week was already two days short due to the weather, the staff and students at St. Gerard School made the most of it! Students collected over $1,900 in Pennies for Patients (the Lymphoma Society). On Thursday students participated in fun day (pre-5th grade), went to the Summit (6th grade) and went bowling at Royal Scot (7th and 8th grade). On Friday we topped it all off with an assembly. Alumni students Anthony Lottes and Matt Macksood came to share their stories of following your dreams and listening to the plan that God has for us. Anthony has followed his dream of playing music and now it is actually his career! Matt Macksood walked on the MSU football team only to go to the Rose Bowl and earn a scholarship. The assembly ended by playing “Minute to Win It” games. Students were chosen by turning in coupons indicating that they had read at least 15 minutes for each coupon. Anthony and Matt stuck around and helped with the games! Congratulations to 3rd grader, Will Gardner, our first recipient of the “Minute to Win It” school trophy! Look for it in the trophy case next time you are in the gym!
