Staff News Please welcome Mrs. Sara (Feldpausch) Wade to our teaching staff this fall. Mrs. Wade accepted the third grade teaching position. Mrs. Wade grew up in St. Johns and attended St. Joe’s Elementary School and in fact was married there just a few weeks ago. Sara graduated from Grand Valley in December. She did her student teaching in the 4th grade in Waverly Community Schools and after her student teaching she had several long-term positions at Winans, Elmwood, and Colt. We look forward to having Mrs. Wade as part of our St. Gerard School family!

We also are thrilled to welcome back Fr. Paul Erickson. As a seminarian student, Fr. Paul was assigned to St. Gerard a few years ago and he is thrilled to be back as our Associate. We look forward to celebrating Mass with Fr. Paul and welcoming him into our classrooms!

We Are So Blessed!  If you’ve been by the school recently, you will notice that the construction is coming along nicely in fact, we are right on schedule! This fall we will be the benefactors of new windows, a newly converted preschool classroom, we moved and updated our Art/Spanish room, and our resource room will have some additional space. Our school is blessed to be part of such a dedicated community that values Catholic education. Thank you to the many parishioners and school families that gave to the capital campaign so that our school can continue to thrive.

Open House Night   Open house is definitely a highlight for teachers, students and parents alike. This evening provides all an opportunity to meet one another, see their room, and in many circumstances get their desks or cubbies settled. Please refer to your student’s supply list regarding what items to bring the night of open house. Supplies lists were sent home in report card envelopes and can be found on the school’s website or available in the school office as well. A school store will be open outside of the music room for hard to find items such as school planners and recorders, etc.

Also as you begin thinking about school supplies and uniforms, we ask that when shopping for girls’ school shoes that you are mindful of keeping them simple. Please avoid glitter or canvas shoes (ex. Tom’s (or Bob’s) brand shoes). The purpose of a school uniform is to keep things simple.

Hot Lunch News Hot lunch will be available beginning Tuesday, September 3, 2013. Students will need to bring a sack lunch and drink the first week of school (Aug. 27-29). Hot lunch is ordered and paid for on a monthly basis. Our menu for September is enclosed and will be available to order online August 18th-25th. If you do not place your order by August 25th, you will not be able to place an order until Sept. 18th-25th for October’s lunch. Please note that due to state regulations our lunch price is $2.50. Milk remains at $.50.

To locate the September hot lunch menu for ordering purposes, you will need to go to our website, Click on the “current families” link on the top header bar and follow to the hot lunch link. You may also go directly to

If you ordered last year, you are not a first time user. Your account is still active. Use last year’s login code. It has not changed. If this is your first time using our system, you will need to enter our school code (38SGSNC) to activate your account. Please follow the account activation instructions on the website.

If you do not wish to pay online, your check for lunches ordered will need to be in the school office no later than the 25th of each month. If you have problems ordering hot lunch, please call Carol Benjamin in the school office at 321-6126. Please do not select the “get help” option on the website as you will not be able to “get much help” there.

Auction News If you haven’t yet; please mark your calendars for our annual auction on Saturday, November 9th. This one-time fundraiser provides a variety of resources for our students such as new desks, computers, up grades to our surround sound systems, new science materials, and items that teachers put on their yearly wish lists. This event requires each family to volunteer their time, make a donation and/or attend the event itself. Many of our parents and extended friends of St. Gerard School are involved in all three aspects. Please look for more information to follow.

MSU Concessions Looking for another way to help out with that tuition bill? St. Gerard mans a concession stand for football and we recently were asked to run a stand for men’s basketball as well. This opportunity provides our families with another option to reduce their tuition. Reminder: 8th grade parents may work the football season as a fundraiser for Washington DC. If you would like to be on the list to receive an email regarding this opportunity, please email Maureen Winslow at Thank you to both Maureen and Phil Norris who continue to be instrumental in making this a success!

*Reminder that preschool, kindergarten, and 6th grade students have specific immunization as well as hearing and vision screening (kindergarten) requirements that must be met prior to the first day of school. Verification needs to be submitted to Carol Benjamin in the office.

Book Covers If you are in need of having your child’s books (1st-8th grades) covered this fall, you are not too late! Books will be covered and ready to go the first day of school and you will be supporting the 8th graders in their fundraising efforts for Washington DC. Cost for book covering is as follows: (1) student: $14.00, (2) students: $22.00, family maximum: $27.00. If you are interested, mail or drop off a check in the school or parish office with your child’s name(s) and grade for the 2013-2014 school year. Checks can be made out to St. Gerard School.

Soccer for Grades K-3:  Mark your calendar for fall soccer sign ups during the school open house. The soccer program is open to all parishioners attending kindergarten through 3rd grade. The program will include 30 minutes of skills development followed by a 30-minute scrimmage. The season consists of 6 sessions over the course of a 3-week period. This is a great way to introduce students to the game, meet some new friends, and get some great exercise! Registration will take place during our open house from 4:00-6:30 in the school gym. Cost to participate will be $35. As with many of our St. Gerard sports programs, coaches will be needed and vital to the success of the program. Please contact Jay Gruber at with any questions.

TRIP News Reminder that we added a summer TRIP day on Monday, August 12th. Parents may place orders from 7:30-9:00 a.m in the parish office with pick up available on or after Friday, August 16th. VIRTUS Training Parents are a crucial part of school! The support of our St. Gerard community is really second to none. If you are either new to our school or have a younger student, please be aware that before you are able to volunteer to work groups, go on fieldtrips, or coach, you must be VIRTUS trained.
