St. Gerard provides a foreign language experience (FLEX) program to its students in first through eighth grade. St. Gerard utilizes a Spanish curriculum developed by Northern Arizona University. It is a complete sequential curriculum which integrates social studies, science, health, mathematics, language arts and fine arts content into its lessons.
The students in first and second grade are taught Spanish once a week in their homeroom for 20 minutes by the K-9th grade certified Spanish teacher. The students in third through sixth grade are taught in the Spanish classroom once a week for 25 minutes.
The junior high students who choose Spanish as an elective course are taught 50 minutes once a week for a semester. The elective students assist in planning and participating in the yearly Spanish bilingual Mass for the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12. They also create Día de los Muertos and Semana Santa cultural displays, as well as, attend a field trip to a local Mexican restaurant with a Spanish speaking staff.
